Advertising Design v.s. Graphic Design
January 1, 2010
Composition without the combination of conscious creative development and objective measureability, (or the intent to measure) is merely Graphic Design or art and IS NOT Advertising Design.

There are thousands of types of design occupations around the world; interior design, landscape design, fashion design, package design, architectural design - the list goes on. Advertising Design differs from fine-art, art, or even Graphic Design in 2 main ways:

Firstly, Advertising Design works to achieve, and systematically addresses, communication objectives which have been established to assist in meeting an individual's or company's pre determined financial goals. In order for Graphic Design or art to qualify as Advertising Design, these objectives must be met in such a clear, compelling and creative manner that they create a visceral and positive reaction with their intended audience.

Secondly, it is the conscious act of quantifying this reaction through measurability channels that differentiates Advertsing Design from Graphic Design, art or fine art.

Although there are additional considerations beyond the realm of production development that can effect the success of a campaign (such as media placement and scheduling) if you've ever spent money on a campaign that didn't work for you - don't blame Advertising... there's a chance that what you got was just Graphic Design.
